Remembering My Dad: A Tribute to

A Strong, Loving and Misunderstood Man

Dad, I carry your memory with pride and gratitude
forever cherishing the father who shaped my world
in ways words can scarcely capture

My Beloved Dad
My Beloved Dad

Dad, 18 years have passed since you tragically left this world, but not a single day goes by without your memory touching my heart, as I mark this significant anniversary, I find myself reflecting on the incredible man you were, strong, intelligent, above all, a devoted father, in remembering you today, I celebrate not only your remarkable life, but also your everlasting legacy, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude, for the privilege of being your darling daughter, as I loved you so dearly, and have missed you so deeply, each and every day in your permanent physical absence

Dad, growing up under your guidance and watchful eye, adhering to a set of principles and values that were non-negotiable, was both challenging and rewarding, since you taught us to strive for excellence, to push beyond our limits, to be the best versions of ourselves, and to never settle for mediocrity, these invaluable lessons, though sometimes imparted with a firm hand, mostly, I yearned for a more lenient, carefree childhood, but were the foundation upon which I have built my life, your insistence on discipline shaped the person I am today, and for that, I am eternally grateful

Dad, to the outside world, your strictness and toughness might have seemed daunting and unyielding, even your approach felt harsh at times, so your methods were questioned, and your intentions misinterpreted, but beneath your stern exterior was a man, who loved your family without equal, a man whose expectations were high, did not shy away from pushing us to reach our full potential, a man whose actions were driven by a great desire to see us succeed and thrive in a world that can be unforgiving, and a man who faced life's trials with courage, mettle, and determination

Dad, underneath your stringent demeanour lay a heart of gold, a heart that beat so fiercely with immense love and complete dedication for those you held dear, even if your love was not always expressed conventionally in words, or affectionate gestures, but rather, through your actions, your sacrifices, and your tireless efforts to provide for us by putting our needs above your own, it was a love that ran so deep, a love that was so powerful and protective, and a love was evident in the small, everyday acts of care, in the quiet moments of advice,  in the pride you took in our triumphs

Dad, you were strong, both in character and will, and your intelligence was one of the most defining traits, you had a keen mind and a sharp wit, always eager to learn and share your knowledge, from discussing complex topics, to solving ordinary problems, your insight was indispensable, and your intellect was matched only by your strength, since you braved the tribulations and hardships head-on, never wavering in your resolve and this combination of intelligence and strength made you a formidable presence in our lives, one that demanded huge respect and great admiration

Dad, throughout your life, despite your many exceptional virtues, you were misunderstood, and judged by people who failed to see beyond the facade, your no-nonsense attitude was mistaken for lack of compassion, but I, as your daughter, the only one, who truly knew and understood you, and I had the unique perspective of witnessing the depth of your love, and the purity of your intentions, knowing that your tough love prepared us so very well for life’s ups and downs, and it was a father’s love, that was often difficult to see in the moment, but becoming crystal clear in hindsight

Dad, on this 18th anniversary of your passing, I am struck by how much of you still lives on in me, how much of your inspirational presence continues to influence my life, in honouring your memory, I strive to embody the qualities that made you so special, I carry the wisdom, I draw strength from your example, I acknowledge the complexities of your character, and I celebrate your legacy of misunderstood brilliance with massive pride, you were and always will be the greatest mentor, the strongest protector, and the most loving father, so my hero, my idol, THANK YOU for everything

you were loved by all

In the midst of mourning of

my darling Mum’s unexpected and sudden passing

I found comfort in the written word

the paper absorbed my tears and the pen

became the companion to my grief-stricken heart

the emotions, too overwhelming for spoken language

found refuge in the silent conversation between ink and paper "
